Extra Part Time Aquatic Center Maintenance Person

CLASSIFICATION: Extra Part Time Aquatic Center Maintenance Person

GRADE: NBNE 6

RATE OF PAY: $20.05 per hour

PLACE OF WORK: Chambersburg Aquatic Center

HOURS OF WORK: Schedule may vary between the hours of 6AM-3PM Monday – Sunday; including holidays.

POSITION SUMMARY

To assist in a wide variety of routine maintenance work, requiring manual skills in the maintenance of Chambersburg Recreation Department’s parks and Aquatic Center properties. Performs work with general instructions, although some specific tasks may require detailed assignment. Work is outdoors and involves exposure to the elements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Maintains the Aquatic Center to include all facilities and amenities within the fenced area;
  • Performs winterization, spring start-up, maintain appropriate water balance, backwashing pool, cleaning pool filtration systems, testing water when needed;
  • Performs routine onsite maintenance and repair;
  • Sweeps, mops, washes, clears or cleans public areas within the Aquatic Center;
  • Collects trash within the parameters of the facility during the course of the pool day, cleans cans when needed;
  • Removes dead animals, and addresses vectors and vermin issues that impact the Aquatic Center;
  • Mows with zero turn mower and trims grass, within the Aquatic Center and adjoining facilities during the pool season;
  • Power washes restrooms, pool deck, locker rooms, etc., or supervises other maintenance employees to complete these tasks;
  • Submits required water tests and record of readings accurately and timely;
  • Complete maintenance and service of “water features” according to manufacturer’s recommendations;
  • Maintains and waxes slides;
  • Operates motor vehicles, power-driven equipment, and other equipment;
  • Inspect and perform necessary maintenance on all accessory furniture and equipment required for daily operations located within the Aquatic Center;
  • Assists in performing a variety of masonry, carpentry, plumbing and painting work;
  • Repairs doors, locks on Borough Recreation property/gates/fences;
  • Maintains good personnel and public relations, and work professionally with employees of other departments to observe and carry out initiatives of the overall common good of the Borough;
  • Communicates with management regarding necessary repairs and/or maintenance-related concerns at the Aquatic Center facility;
  • Maintains sand volleyball and miniature golf course;
  • Works diligently to promote a healthy and positive work environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and required within the scope of assigned responsibilities

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • Ability to learn, follow, and impose Borough policies, rules, procedures, and regulations in a fair and consistent manner;
  • Basic knowledge of landscaping and grounds, lawn cultivation and maintenance operations such as the mowing, raking, weed whacking, and trimming;
  • Basic knowledge of accident prevention precautions applicable to pool maintenance operations;
  • Basic knowledge of equipment and tools used in pool maintenance and general park maintenance activities;
  • Skilled in making repairs and adjustments to pool machinery and general facility amenities;
  • Ability to think critically;
  • Ability to cooperate and work well with others;
  • Ability to keep records and reports and to work from verbal and written directions;
  • Must be able to work independently without supervision to perform required maintenance and work responsibilities;
  • Must be able to clearly explain Borough policies to the public or answer rudimentary customer service questions, appropriately and professionally;
  • Must possess and demonstrate ability to communicate effectively, appropriately, and professionally, verbally and in writing, even under stressful situations;
  • Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities to determine any potential dangers or hazards;
  • Basic knowledge of the systems operation of a swimming pool, including water testing and balancing;
  • Ability to work with staff to schedule, implement, and facilitate surrounding daily job duties, safety and, public relations;
  • Respond quickly and calmly in emergency or stressful situations;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include occasional weekends and evenings, during the Aquatic Center season (April through September);
  • Ability to exercise good professional judgement, and possess the physical/mental ability/agility to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Must be 18 years of age or older;

Experience:

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and pumps;

Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCES

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and maintain required clearances to hold a position at the Chambersburg Borough, specifically the Recreation Department.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Must take and maintain residency at within forty-five (45) driving miles from Chambersburg City Hall within one year of hire.

Incumbent must have and maintain a valid motor vehicles license, 3 years clean driving history, and be insurable in the independent opinion of the Borough's motor vehicle insurance underwriter, in order to remain eligible for this position.

Employee must maintain any job-related certifications acquired throughout the length of their employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The location of work performed by the employee is varied. The employee primarily works in a non-barrier free setting, and at times in an office environment, at Borough recreational facilities, and on Borough property, which may subject the employee to common and sometimes uncommon internal and external exposures. The position may include frequent interactions with the public and other members of the organization. Work may be performed alone, with frequent interruptions, and involves responding to requests from the internal organization stakeholders as well as the community. The employee is frequently exposed to wet, cold, dry, and hot and I or humid conditions. The employee will be working with, or in the presence of, various chemicals which requires a familiar working knowledge and adherence to strict safety precautions. The employee must occasionally visit facilities that are accessible only by uneven paths of travel, stairways, and confined spaces, which may expose the employee to potential hazards.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The employee must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, to all stakeholders within the department’s scope of accountability;

  • Must be able to use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects, and make quick, precise adjustments to machine controls; see differences between colors, shades, and brightness; and hear sounds and recognize the difference between them;
  • Must possess the ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions;
  • Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of fingers/hands; feet/legs; torso necessary to carry out duties of job;
  • Light to medium work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of fifty (50) pounds;
  • Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday as needed to carry out essential job duties;
  • Must be able to crawl in ducts and crawl spaces, deal with dirty and dark confined spaces, as well as vermin, waste, and trash;
  • Must demonstrate emotional stability, pay close attention to details, and concentrate on work;
  • Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position;
  • Occasional physical demand required for lifting, moving, and storing of supplies; housekeeping; etc.;
  • Operates motor vehicles and power-driven equipment.

TRAVEL REQUIRED

Minimal and intermittent travel to and from Borough facilities for meetings and other related business.
